Edison “Snake” Hedley, the island’s unofficial and all-knowing Soup Bowl historian, is a national treasure. Most mornings, you can find him standing cliffside, gazing down at the break he’s surfed for nearly all of his 58 years. “We’d paddle out on old sheets of plywood, and when the tide came up, it looked like boiling soup,” he explains. “That’s where the name came from.”
