Next to a stand of towering fir trees, a group of friends on a wine adventure is enjoying a game of lawn darts – some in flip-flops, some in jeans, all holding glasses of pinot noir. Stoller Vineyard and Winerywas supposed to be the second stop on a four-winery tour, but they’re having too much fun where they are to bother moving on. It happens, especially in Yamhill County, a corner of the Pacific Northwest less than an hour from Portland. The area was once known for its quiet farming communities, but in the late 1960s, a crew of California growers noticed the fertile land and the similarity of the climate to the world’s pre-eminent pinot paradise: Burgundy, France.
