PHOTO ESSAY: Sweden's Unexpected Obsession With American Cars

Driving '66 Mustang Coupe under the midnight sun, photographer Gregor Schmatz tours auto culture in Scandinavia.

Classic cars in Sweden include everything from 1930s hot rods to the winged machines of the 1950s to this 1964 Chevrolet Impala cruising along a winding road on the west coast. To keep them in mint condition, owners only drive them in summer, when the roads are salt- and sand-free. “Winter is for people to fix up and polish their vehicles,” says Schmatz. “Come summer, they take them out of their garages and go for long, beautiful drives, even on a rainy day.”
