Here are our favourite places to hit for an after-work drink in the Texas capital.

Hillside Farmacy

The Hillside Farmacy, housed in Austin’s first African-American-owned drugstore, has flashback decor and classy vintage specials like bubbly and oysters.

1. Odd Duck
On-tap Moscow mules go for $5 Monday to Friday from 2:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. (the discounted snack menu ends at 5 p.m.) and Sunday from 2:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Or opt for 25-percent-off bottles of wine and large-format microbrew beers.

2. Uchi
Join Uchi’s daily Sake Social from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., which includes $3 sake, $6 yellowtail maki, $3 beef nigiri and a selection of izakaya-style small plates for $6 or less.

3. Contigo
Cocktails are $6 Monday to Thursday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., but the happiest days at Contigo are Tuesdays when local beers are $2, Wednesdays when ox-tongue sliders are free and Fridays when fried chicken is $1 a piece (from “5 p.m. ’til it’s gone”).

4. Whisler’s
The classic cocktails, including old-fashioneds, sidecars and High Plains Drifters (Tequila, Campari, lime and honey), on Whisler’s happy-hour menu are $6 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. But you can double-dip Wednesdays by coming back for the late-night Bubbles & Booze happy hour from 9 p.m. to 11:30 p.m., when sparkling-wine cocktails go for $8.

The daily hour stretches from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays and 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. on weekends. The main draws are the $4 to $7 specials on mixed drinks and beer, but the potent Painkillers (spiced rum, coconut cream, pineapple and nutmeg) – and the rest of the specialty cocktail menu – are $8 anytime.
