4 Tea Houses That Are Right on Blend

From Brazil to Berlin, these spots are such a teas.

Small Tea

Small Tea
Coral Gables, Florida

Decked out with warm wood and a ceiling canopied with 1,250 baskets made from Abaca cloth, this boutique is a modern take on tea traditions. Eighty-four varieties from around the globe are on display, but the handcrafted Tiny Treasure rosettes are a gem: pure jasmine that grows at 1,400 metres above sea level in China’s Fujian Province.

Great Wall Tea Co.
New Westminster, British Columbia

It’s hard to miss the mosaic made of nearly 460 tea tins that covers the back wall of Great Wall Tea Co., a 150-square-foot tea bar along the River Market at the New Westminster Quay. Affixed to the lids are photographs of patterned teacups and saucers shot from a bird’s-eye view. Try one of 125 varieties from the shop’s loose-leaf teas, its most popular being the Cream Earl Grey with a smidge of vanilla.

El Té
Pôrto Alegre, Brazil

The storefront of this tea shop, designed by Brazilian architecture firm Estudio 30 51, is adorned with two floor-to-ceiling wooden letters: T and É (tea, in Spanish). Cleverly, they double as a sort of backlit urban lantern so nighttime passers-by can peek in to see the vibrant Pantone wall of teas. Thirty blends imported from Germany and China are on offer, along with sweet pies and homemade cakes.

Paper & Tea
Berlin

In this museum-style boutique, visitors can browse whole-leaf teas displayed (by degree of oxidation) on free-standing cubes, eliminating the need for a behind-the-counter intermediary. Slide open the drawers to smell the teas and read up on their origins and flavours. When you’ve made your pick – the Happy Huizong, with notes of fresh bamboo, perhaps – watch the “teasits” prepare it in the traditional gong fu style.
