Co-owner of Montreal restaurants Garde Manger and Le Bremner, Kyle Nares also runs Dinr, a mobile app that pairs last-minute planners with last-minute openings at high-demand hot spots across Canada. Dinr recently expanded to include 80 of the hottest tables from Vancouver to Quebec City. We caught up with the wine geek and avid runner before a business trip to Portland.

What’s your packing style?
Very simple: I’m a utilitarian, one-bag guy.

Do you travel for work or for pleasure?
I mix the two and make sure a side trip to wine country is on the itinerary. In June, I was in Calgary visiting restaurants and I flew down to Oregon for a week. And last March, some friends and I attended Les Grands Jours de Bourgogne, a week of tasting and eating and touring vineyards.

How do you balance a full week of tasting?
All the eating and drinking that happens when I travel becomes excessive, so I run. A few years ago, I was in Burgundy, and I said, “I’m going to run that hill.” I found myself at the top of the Beaune Premiers Crus; there was even a map to situate me. Talk about a sense of place.

What are your favourite wine destinations?
Sicily is amazing in the fall, as is Rioja in Spain. I’ve made a bunch of trips to France and Italy, but my dream trip is Portugal. I love the wines there, without knowing a lot about them.

Any favourite kitchen products to recommend?
Each of the products in our My Kitchen Staples line with Chuck Hughes has a story, like My Greek Landlord’s Extra Virgin Olive Oil. (The landlord at Garde Manger also runs an import-export business.) We also source cider vinegar and maple syrup from suppliers we’ve been working with for years.
