The Keefer, Vancouver
Design: Gair Williamson and Chris Woodford (Gair Williamson Architects)
If the goal of a hotel is to provide a home away from home, the architects behind the Keefer make you want to move right in. Williamson and Woodford took a century-old warehouse in Chinatown and gutted it. Then they incorporated three apartment-size suites into three of the building’s existing four floors (the ground level houses the Keefer Bar) and flung a penthouse suite with a rooftop patio on top. Despite the size, the hotel is big on details, from the wooden beams and brick walls reminding guests of the property’s past to the “flex balconies” that do double duty as enclosed solariums. Did we mention the glass-bottomed rooftop pool that floods the penthouse’s living room below with light? Home suite home, indeed.
