The Waikiki Edition, Honolulu
Design: Glenn Pushelberg and George Yabu (Yabu Pushelberg)
The surfboard sculpture at the Waikiki Edition.
Yabu Pushelberg had it right when they described this lobby as an urban oasis. There’s something in the way the soft lighting contrasts with the Hawaiian sun… or is it the soaped oak walls set against the hand-scraped wood flooring? No matter – the linear space, accentuated by a 21-metre-long slate runner, will make you want to linger. To find the bar, peek behind the oversize, rotating white bookcase that divides the lobby. (Talk about making a grand entrance.)

"A hotel is like a wife: You don’t love her because she’s a good cook or because she’s pretty; you choose her for her sterling qualities. Yabu Pushelberg didn’t design a stage set but rather a place where you instantly feel at home.”
