Four Recommendations From Our Guide in Anguilla

After a friend introduced Suresh Bhalla to Anguilla eight years ago, this former banker decided to split his time between Toronto and what he calls "the Nantucket of the Caribbean." All floor-to-ceiling glass, the three coastal villas he rents out are aptly named the Kishti Villa Collection after an Urdu word meaning a mystic sense of being at one with the sea.

Rendezvous Bay

Walking on this white-sand beach has become a favourite island ritual for my wife and me. The water in the bay is warm – like a hot tub – and the waves are gentle. There aren't many people around, especially in the off-season, so it's quiet.

Tradition Sailing

The Tradition is a restored 37-year-old, 50-foot, gaff-rigged West Indian sloop owned by Laurie Gumbs. It's been a labour of love for him and his life partner, Debbie, who offer sea cruises on the classic vessel. Once, while at sea, it poured with rain for about an hour, so we anchored at Little Harbour and everyone jumped into the water, laughing.

The Pumphouse

Laurie also owns this spot, set in a former salt mill. It's rustic, with vintage metal beer signs, old fishing nets, Christmas lights and oddities – we go there to eat jerk chicken and ribs and dance to local music. The rum punch is famous, but I only drink Baileys on ice.

Johnno's

This open-air bar is popular on Sundays for afternoon jazz. You can go for a swim, listen to music, eat a light lunch and go back to swim. Sprocka, the lead guitar player, is an amazing musician; he accompanies visiting jazz groups from St. Maarten and has a legendary following on the island.
