Gary Vaynerchuck on Giving More and Letting Go of the Past

Tips for the modern business traveller from the investor and CEO of Vaynermedia.

Gary Vaynerchuck

Gary Vaynerchuk isn’t your typical CEO. Just check out his Instagram, where he keeps millions of followers hustling with slogans like “Less envy, more work.” It’s that go-getter attitude that fuels his many projects: running his digital marketing agency (with clients including PepsiCo), promoting his fifth book, hosting a podcast and designing sneakers for a collab with K-Swiss.

1. My business mantra Give more than you take. It’s the ultimate leverage.

2. My eureka moment When my family’s wine business sold 100 orders from an e-blast in 1996. I knew then that e-mail was going to be powerful.

3. Best place for a business lunch I find lunches inefficient, so I do breakfasts or drinks. My go-to, the Hunt & Fish Club, is between my home and office in Manhattan.

4. In business, now’s a good time to stop holding on to the past. “This is how we’ve always done it” is the most dangerous saying.

5. What I had to learn on the fly How to manage a family-business dynamic. When it’s your dad’s company, you need empathy.

6. The biggest risk I ever took is being completely authentic. A lot of people didn’t want to do business with me because I curse and say things that aren’t the status quo, but I’ve always spoken my truth.

7. Window or aisle? Window, so I don’t have to get up when I don’t want to.

8. Dream seatmate If they don’t have to be alive, it’s Randy “Macho Man” Savage. He was my favourite wrestler as a kid.

9. Last TV binge Dave Chappelle’s stand-up specials on Netflix.

10. I always listen to what consumers are saying and doing. Podcasting is bigger than ever, so I’m asking why.
