Eui Yong Zong-Leftover

Eui Yong Zong

Born in South Korea and raised in China, Yong moved to Canada at the age of 16. Yong started in the world of documentaries when he joined the feature Forgiven, filmed in Palestinian territories, as an assistant director. While working on various documentary projects including Defector (TVO, Hotdocs) as a translator, Yong directed his short documentary My Grandpa, which won the Allan King Memorial Prize at the Documentary Filmmaking Institute. He then went on to study film production at York University. Yong’s documentary Elizabeth was part of 2013 TIFF Student Showcase and the winner of 2013 Cinesiege for best documentary.  In the same year his experimental documentary Conceived won the best experimental short award at Montreal World Film Festival. Yong’s docu-fiction Leftover, a project that featured a real family of North Korean refugees, won 2014 Toronto Film Critics Association Award in the student category. His most recent documentary Julio is an official selection at 2015 Hot docs Documentary film festival.
