Reinventing the Wheel

Whether you’re modern-minded or the sporty type, here are three dream road trips that are just your speed.

The Sporty Road Trip

The Sporty Road Trip

Get your adrenaline fix on a drive from coast to coast on Vancouver Island – surfing and downhill biking included.
By Andrew Braithwaite

Stop #1

WildPlay Nanaimo
WildPlay’s 17-acre park includes ziplines, the Monkido treetop obstacle course and a harness swing that produces a 2.3 G-force acceleration. But the ultimate test of your mettle is the 43-metre headfirst bungee jump from atop a bridge spanning the Nanaimo River canyon. If you ask nicely when giving the details of your weight, the jump engineers will calculate a (highly recommended) half-torso dunk in the river.

Stop #2

Mount Washington Bike Park
Rent a Rocky Mountain ride with full suspension and hydraulic disc brakes, strap on head and body armour and take a high-speed chairlift to the top of Mount Washington, which offers the best downhill biking on the island. Prepare your joints: Snaking through hemlock and yellow cedar forests, the 37 kilometres of beginner to expert trails have names like Quick & Dirty, Back in Black and Monster Mile.

1 Strathcona Pkwy., Mount Washington, 250-338-1386

Stop #3

Westside Surf School
Head west to Tofino for the world’s best cold-water surfing – and the local dude culture that goes with it. At Westside Surf School, instructors trained by the academy’s director, famed Canadian pro Sepp Bruhwiler, will teach you to stand on your own two feet. Beginners start out on softboards, while more experienced wave riders graduate to fibreglass. And it doesn’t hurt that the backdrop is a majestic old-growth rainforest.

150 4th St., Tofino, 250-725-2404
