Souvenir of the Month: Montreal's TSHU Handkerchiefs

A modern twist on the cotton swatch.

When Marion Poirier and Thomas Geissmann visited Geissmann's elderly uncle in France, he gave them a stack of lovely old handkerchiefs that sparked an idea. The couple now sells their TSHU line – a modern twist on the cotton swatch – through their website and in such fashion-forward shops as Simons. Designed, silkscreened and embroidered in Montreal, the handkerchiefs come in patterns like skulls and bones on pink, a chic grey paisley and a cube motif that recalls Habitat 67. Single-sided versions work best as pocket squares, while double-sided ones make for stylish sandwich wrappers. "When people buy a gift, they like it to be bold," Poirier says. Eco-bonus: A tree is planted for each TSHU sold.
