5 Things to Do in Western Scotland

Where to eat, shop and stay in the golf-friendly region near Glasgow.

Western Scotland

01 In Scotland, a Munro is a mountain that stands more than 914 metres tall. Conquer the summit of Ben Lomond, the southernmost Munro, by hiking up from the east shore of Loch Lomond. On a sunny day, your reward is a panorama of the Highlands.

02 Hit the Loch Lomond Arms Hotel in Luss for your fill of the area’s ales and fresh mussels. A couple of pints later, you might want to check into one of the rustic-chic suites above the pub. (

03 Scotland’s greatest poet, Robbie Burns, lived large and left behind a legacy of stories, songs and poems. Set aside a day for the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum in Ayr (but beware of spontaneous outbursts of “Auld Lang Syne”). (

04 Visit the Auchentoshan Distillery, just north of Glasgow, for a tour of the operation and a wee dram of Scotland’s only triple-distilled single malt whisky. (

Where to Stay

Piersland House Hotel

Housed in a Victorian country manor, the Piersland House Hotel, in South Ayrshire, is steps from the Royal Troon Golf Club and Troon Beach on the Atlantic coast. Sit down with the locals for the lunch buffet in the Walker Bar (named for Johnnie Walker, the original owner’s grandfather) or dine alfresco in the lush gardens.
