Entertainment

Thanks to the low-gear beats of Fischerspooner’s “Amuse Bouche,” molecular gastronomy has infiltrated the iPod. The song’s lyrics, like “It may be strange and a little bit frightening / An acquired taste but very enlightening,” capture the experience of trying, oh, a guacamole cappuccino for the first time.

The Food Theme

Hip hop meets soul food with The Food Theme, a 26-course soundtrack created by Cool Calm Pete for Theme magazine. The New York rapper and producer remixes favourites like "Song of the Shrimp" by Elvis Presley and Kool & The Gang’s “Chocolate Buttermilk” with his signature drowsy, heavy beats. Bonus? Vocals from Ernie and Bert arguing over pie.

Snacktime!

This children's collection of 24 recordings was released in 2008 – but thanks to songs like “Raisins” (“Raisins come from grapes, people come from apes / I come from Canada”) and cameos by Gordon Lightfoot,  Lyle Lovett, Sarah McLachlan and “Weird Al” Yankovic, it’s easy to see why the album’s still in rotation.

Remixed

A carrot flute. A harp strung with rhubarb. A saxophone with a red pepper bell and a cucumber body. The members of the Vegetable Orchestra certainly aren’t afraid to play with their food. Seasoned with techno beats supplied by renowned DJs, the group keeps it fresh with Ireland-based Sian’s “Secret Garden” remix.

Géophonik

Household appliances as musical instruments? In “Congélateur,” a track off Guillaume Arsenault's album Géophonik, the Québécois author/composer/performer samples the sound of a refrigerating compressor, which he builds into a rhythm and fills out with electronica. Just the thing to chill out to.
