Escape room game series

When Toronto’s historic Casa Loma closes for the day, a dozen patrons stay trapped inside. As a team, they’ll find clues and solve interactive puzzles to escape before time runs out. To set the scene, professional actors guide players through the adventure. Choose from two missions: The World War II-themed Escape from the Tower tests your cartographic, mathematical and spatial skills, while King of the Bootleggers is set in the 1920s during Prohibition and takes place within the castle’s underground tunnels. Both games incorporate authentic period props into the action, from a desk owned by Casa Loma’s founder, Henry Pellatt, to a vintage player piano. Expect to be challenged: According to the games’ designers, fewer than 10 percent of teams manage to complete their escape mission within the hour.

Beginner soapmaking workshop

Take a seat in the cosmetics laboratory off Coop Coco’s Little Italy storefront, where shelves upon shelves of neatly labelled ingredients await transformation into effective natural beauty and cleaning products, from perfume to mineral makeup to the subject of today’s lesson: soap. Take notes at your station while resident instructor Geneviève Côté runs through the basics of saponification and safety measures. Now tie on an apron and put your hands on the oils and butters – coconut, olive and shea – that you’ll blend with essential oils, exfoliating additives (blueberry and cranberry seeds), clays and pigments, plus sodium hydroxide. Raise the bar on the store-bought variety by going home with a takeout box of your own custom-scented and coloured soap, plus the know-how to make plenty more.
