“To avoid injury, stick to short strides with a high cadence. Your feet should be switching every half second or less so that if one foot starts to roll, you are already putting your other one down.”
– Gilbert Ayoub, professional triathlon coach, Cycle Technique, Montréal
This is jogging rejigged for adventure-seekers: A series of stutter steps and leaps takes you on a (often muddy) test of endurance, strength and agility with some spectacular scenery along the way. Dodge gnarled roots and jagged stones while running up steep ungroomed paths that wend away from civilization. Bonus: Staying balanced on uneven ground forces your core to work harder than pounding the asphalt to the sounds and fumes of urban traffic. Runner’s high guaranteed.
Where to go
Kalalau Trail, Kauai
The 18-kilometre trail starts at Ke’e Beach and hugs the rocky Na- Pali Coast over sea cliffs and through five lush tropical valleys. Though the run is technically challenging – heavy rain can make the paths slippery – the rewards are stunning views (the island was the backdrop for Jurassic Park) and a dip at secluded Kalalau Beach at the finish line.
Yukon River Trail, Whitehorse
Running 13.6 kilometres of rolling hills from the Miles Canyon footbridge to Rotary Park will get you up to speed for any marathon (and the one held here is possibly the toughest in North America). Enjoy tranquil views of float planes bobbing on Schwatka Lake before kicking into high gear for major inclines like the aptly named Heartbreak Hill.
The West Highland Way, Glencoe
Set off from Inveroran to traverse the wild and vast Rannoch Moor, a spectacular expanse of heather and bog. Pack your camera for snaps of Buachaille Etive Mòr, a.k.a. Scotland’s most photographed mountain, while you cool down with a pint at the 17th-century Kings House Hotel (about 16 kilometres from your starting point).
