We’ve Got a British Sense of Humour

Top 3 British comedies, from Fawlty Towers to Gavin and Stacey

Over the last fifty years us Brits have produced some of the most famous and globally influential TV comedy shows. Well, I’m English, and my mother thinks I’m hysterical, so, I consider myself an authority on the subject. Here are my top picks for what to catch on your next Air Canada flight if you want to truly appreciate what makes British comedy brilliant.

The legendary Fawlty Towers is still one of our greatest exports and the show’s international success is all the more impressive when you consider that only 12 episodes were ever made. In fact, this may have been one of its greatest strengths. 12 episodes of flamboyant characters, perfect comic timing and writing that never falters add up to a magic formula. You can catch this must-see comedy masterpiece on Air Canada throughout November.

For a true taste of British life, however, nothing compares to Spaced. Groundbreaking from the day it aired, it was one of the only sitcoms set in 90’s London to reveal all the period’s clubbing, drugs and casual relationships on mainstream television. It’s funny, seriously funny. And yes, it is true: at any sign of crisis a Brit’s first response is to put the kettle on. Enjoy Spaced on the Comedy Channel on Air Canada in October.

My next pick has to be Gavin and Stacey, another little gem of show that has begun to make its mark outside of the UK. There are currently just 14 episodes of this multi-award-winning comedy drama, but fear not, there is a third season in production. This is a gentle and subtle series, with deftly crafted scripts and universally great performances from the ensemble cast.

We’ll have more brilliant new British shows arriving on Air Canada in the New Year. I can’t tell you what yet, but trust me, they will knock your socks off. In the mean time, order a nice cup of tea and get ready to laugh out loud in your seat.
