Since time immemorial, people have sought the delight of pizza pie without the pie. Cue the calzone (Italian for “trouser leg”), essentially a slice with the toppings baked inside the dough. At Bova’s Bakery in Boston, you can find classics like meatball-stuffed or the more continentally minded asparagus and prosciutto. But the best I’ve had is the Wimpy Skippy: a spinach and pepperoni combo from Rhode Island’s Caserta Pizzeria that settles down even the harshest stomach grumbling – for a while.
