Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum

Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum

This turn-of-the-century mansion was designed to look like a 15th-century Venetian palazzo and is filled with thousands of pieces of furniture, sculptures, textiles and art from Isabella Gardner’s personal collection. In 1903, she carefully chose the location of every piece, stipulating in her will that the collection never change. Over 100 years later, the museum looks exactly the same as Gardner originally envisioned it. (Except for the empty spaces where, among other works, a Degas, Vermeer and three Rembrandts were stolen in one of the world’s most famous art heists. But that’s another story.)
