Jeronimos Monastery

Lisbon’s most celebrated monument and a World Heritage Site, Jeronimos Monastery was built in the 1500s and is the resting place of the famous explorer Vasco da Gama. (It also contains the tombs of King Manuel and other important Portuguese figures.) Admission to the Gothic and early-Renaissance-style landmark is free on Sundays and holidays until 2 p.m.
