Old Nice is a web of narrow streets brimming with boutiques, markets, bars and bistros. The buildings reveal their Italian affinities with yellow, ochre and red facades and louvered shutters. It’s almost impossible to leave this maze empty-handed – or on an empty stomach. Local specialties like stuffed vegetables, pissaladière, tourte de blettes (chard pie), olives and socca (a crêpe made from chickpea flower) can be savoured streetside or on a café terrace. The colourful and fragrant Flower Market, held under the striped awnings of the pedestrian-friendly Cours Saleya, is a pure delight.
