When enRoute sent award-winning Canadian photographer Grant Harder to China’s Yunnan province this time last year, he felt inspired to keep travelling. Two flights, one 35-hour train ride from the Xinjiang capital Urumqi, several helpful strangers and a lot of hand-gesturing later he arrived in Kashgar, China’s westernmost city. From there, he hired a guide to drive the Karakoram Highway, which traces one of the ancient Silk Road paths nearly all the way to Islamabad, Pakistan. Here’s some of what he saw.
