The Long Walk

Timothy Taylor Tweets as he follows the Way of St. James across northern Spain

Timothy Taylor

Every year, thousands of pilgrims follow The Way of Saint James, a medieval pilgrimage route leading worshipers to Santiago de Compostela, in the northwestern corner of Spain, where the apostle is said to be buried. This year, Timothy Taylor will be traversing the nearly 800km from Irun, in the Basque Country, to this holy city with only a cell phone and his hiking boots. He’ll be arriving on July 25th, just in time for the feast, but you can follow his progress on this most low-tech of journeys in the most high-tech of ways: with our interactive map and live Twitter feed.

  • Philosophical moment. A 21st century pilgrimage is a construct to begin with, so why not take a taxi the final 20k? Deliberating.

  • Lugo. Famous walled city. The Primitivo is sadly over. I'll miss it. But do I need to take a day now to do laundry? Yes. Yes I do.
