The Shilla Seoul

From its perch on Namsan Mountain, this recently renovated hotel is perfectly located for sampling the city's soju bars, bulgogi houses and noodle joints – if you have room after the steamed pork buns, prime rib and petits fours on the hotel's breakfast menu.

What we loved The beef burger at the Library, the hotel's piano bar and lounge (a favourite hangout for Vuitton-clad young Seoulites).

If you only have one night Request a windowside table at La Yeon for nighttime city views from the 23rd floor and a meal of braised abalone, char-grilled eel and royal hot pot soups.

Bonus You're 10 minutes away from the jumble of street-food stalls in the aptly named Mukja Golmok (food alley).
