Out Of Office: Dale Wytiaz

Notes for the modern business traveller from Dale Wytiaz, president for the Americas at Weber-Stephen Products, maker of Weber grills.

Dale Wytiaz

Dale Wytiaz can take the heat, having been with Weber-Stephen Products – the barbecue giant that invented the dome-shaped grill – since 2008. In October, the company opens its first Canadian headquarters in Vaughan, Ontario, where budding grill masters can earn their chops at the Weber Grill Academy.

1. Always listen to music that suits your mood. And your mother!

2. My eureka moment As rush chairman at my college fraternity, I learned how to get people to rally behind my game plan. That sense of accomplishment inspired me to pursue a career in sales and marketing.

3. What I had to learn on the fly How to be an active listener; doing more listening than talking. You can’t learn that in a training class.

4. My go-to gadget My iPhone, so I can check and every day.

5. Best place for a business lunch? We have four Weber grills in the U.S. I go to the one in Schaumburg, Illinois, for the cedar plank salmon.

6. Window or aisle? Aisle, unless I know there's going to be great scenery.

7. My business mantra It doesn’t matter how talented an individual is; it’s how you work together as a team that matters. I’ll take a strong team over one individual any time.

8. The biggest risk I ever took was moving from Dallas to Chicago for a new job in a completely different industry from the one I left.

9. In business, now’s a good time to take advantage of the current economic uptick and to raise your expectations.

10. In my carry-on you'll find very comfortable shoes, like Ecco, and Carmex lip balm.
