Out of Office: Scott Monty

Notes for the modern business traveller from @ScottMonty, Ford Motor Company’s head of social media.

Scott Monty

When Scott Monty joined the auto-motive giant in 1998, he leveraged its family history to develop a social media personality, coining the word “tweetup” along the way. And with over 60,000 Twitter followers, he’s driving more connections with the company’s customers than ever.

1. Always listen to your customers. Right or wrong, the passionate ones need to be embraced.

2. The biggest risk I ever took Leaving Boston after 20 years to settle down in Detroit to join Ford, just before the automotive industry met its most significant challenge in 2008.

3. In business, now is a good time to shake things up. So many businesses keep the “we’ve always done it that way” mentality when the world around them has changed.

4. My eureka moment Understanding how the idea of “I’m good at using the Internet” could translate into a job.

5. Best work lunch Miller’s Bar in Dearborn, Michigan, is a gritty place with the best burgers around.

6. My go-to gadget My iPad.

7. In my carry-on you’ll find A book. Recently I read Once Upon a Car by Bill Vlasic, about the fall and rise of the U.S. automakers. Even a social media guy needs to be analog once in a while!

8. My business mantra/motto “If you wish to persuade me, you must think my thoughts, feel my feelings and speak my words.” – Cicero

9. What I had to learn on the fly There’s no road map with social media – we’re all finding our own way.

10. Window or aisle? Aisle. I like socializing with passengers and I’m first off the plane.
