Q&A with Eugenie Bouchard

The Canadian tennis champ on poutine, diamonds and infinity pools.

 Eugenie Bouchard

Home base: Plantation, Florida
Hometown: Montreal
Claim to fame: First Canadian tennis player to reach the French Open semifinals
Current project: The Roger’s Cup in Montreal
Travel essential: “A Kindle. I spend so much time in airports and on airplanes, and I love reading. I’m into the classics, and now it’s Anna Karenina.”
Next vacation: Mexico

How do you make time to explore the cities you visit?
Once in a while I try to take an afternoon off. Last year I was in China and went to the Great Wall. It was amazing to see one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Walking up and down all the steps was almost like training.

Do you have any pre-game rituals?
The only superstition I have is to not have any superstitions, but I do listen to music to relax before a game. I like Rihanna, Drake and Miley Cyrus. What’s the first thing you do when you go back to Montreal? Sometimes, my mom picks me up at the airport and we go get a poutine at the Gibeau Orange Julep. The fries there are really good. I’m an athlete, so really I don’t eat them a lot.

You’re a fan of handbags. Who’s the best-accessorized tennis player?
Definitely Serena. Sometimes I’m surprised she can play tennis wearing such big earrings or sporting a diamond-encrusted necklace. It looks so nice, but I’m just worried she’ll lose a diamond!

You like swimming. What hotel has the best pool?
The Marina Bay Sands in Singapore has an infinity pool on the 60th floor with the most amazing view. The water goes over the edge and it feels like you're swimming among the buildings.

Do you have any travel tips?
Stay hydrated and get a neck pillow! I got mine at an airport: it’s a big, thick memory-foam one. The best $30 I've ever spent.
