Many airports are located near residential and other noise-sensitive areas, so pilots adhere to procedures to lessen the noise footprint. When departing from Toronto Pearson International Airport, we can’t make unauthorized turns until the aircraft has reached 3,600 feet; the standard departure path reduces noise near the airport and adjoining areas. In Vancouver, when runway conditions are met – no excess rain, for instance – we don’t use maximum reverse on landing because of the loud rumbling. Some airports prioritize runways to lessen noise during quiet hours, while others don’t have set noise abatement procedures.
